It's 8.30 pm on a wet Thursday in Bengaluru, the rider has been stuck at Silk Board for 25 minutes, and the customer opens a bag that's half pulp, half sambar. That one order costs you a refund, a one-star review and probably the customer.
Rain-proof food delivery packaging comes down to three layers: a container that truly seals, sauces kept apart from dry food, and an outer bag that's closed at the top so water can't drip in. Miss one and the other two won't save you.
Quick answer
- The northeast monsoon was forecast to set in over south India around 15 October 2026, with heavy rain expected in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh (Skymet).
- Most rain damage happens at the seams: loose lids, gravy touching dry food, and open-topped bags.
- Bagasse anti-leak containers with fitted lids hold curries and gravies far better than open trays or foil wrapped in a carry bag.
- Separating gravies into a 120 ml lidded dip bowl and closing the outer bag adds roughly ₹6 per order with Packpe pricing.
Why does October rain hit Bengaluru food delivery so hard?
Because October is one of Bengaluru's wettest months, and this year the rain arrived right on schedule. The normal October rainfall for Bengaluru Urban district is 118 mm, and in 2024 the district logged 241 mm by 22 October, its fourth-wettest October in 124 years (Deccan Herald).
For this week, the Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru forecast heavy rain with thundershowers and 30–40 kmph gusts in parts of Bengaluru Urban and Rural on 15 and 16 October 2026, followed by light to moderate thundershowers on 17 and 18 October. It also warned about waterlogging and traffic disruption (The Bengaluru Live).
Waterlogging means longer rides, and longer rides mean your packaging has to hold for 45 minutes instead of 20. Steam builds up, lids loosen on bumpy roads, and rain finds every open gap in the bag.
What is the northeast monsoon?
The northeast monsoon is the second rain season of the year for south India, setting in around mid-October as the southwest monsoon withdraws. Skymet expected it to arrive on time in 2026, with the opening week bringing heavy rain to all five of its subdivisions (Skymet, 13 October 2026). If you deliver anywhere in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala or Andhra Pradesh, this is your season too.
What is the best rain-proof food delivery packaging for curries and gravies?
A bagasse container with a snug-fitting lid, sized so the food sits just below the rim. Bagasse is the fibre left over after sugarcane is crushed for juice, pressed into plates, bowls and containers that are compostable and hold hot, wet food without going limp quickly.
For a rice-and-curry meal, our 750 ml bagasse anti-leak rectangular containers with lids are built for exactly this. They measure 16.5 x 12.5 x 5.5 cm and work out to about ₹14.19 a piece. For dal, sambar or a single curry, the 500 ml round anti-leak containers come to about ₹11.45 each.
Don't fill to the brim. Leave about a finger's width of space so the lid seats properly, and wipe the rim before closing, because a single grain of rice on the edge is enough to break the seal. You can browse every size in our containers collection.
Common mistake: lidding piping-hot food straight off the stove
Close a lid on food that's still steaming hard and the steam turns into water on the underside of the lid. That water drips back onto rotis and fried items and makes them soggy before the rider even leaves. Give gravies 60–90 seconds to stop steaming before you lid them, especially on humid evenings.
How do you stop gravy from leaking into the rest of the order?
Keep wet and dry food in separate containers, every time. A 120 ml lidded dip bowl for chutney, raita or extra gravy costs very little and saves the whole order.
Our 120 ml moulded fibre dip bowls with lids come to about ₹2.25 each. The 60 ml version is about ₹1.50 if you only need a spoon of chutney.
A quick cost check for a typical kitchen
Say you run a 20-table South Indian restaurant in Koramangala doing 60 delivery orders on a rainy evening. This is an example, not a real business, but the maths holds.
Add one dip bowl (₹2.25) and one sealed outer pouch (₹3.60) to every order and you spend about ₹5.85 more per order, or ₹351 for the night. That's roughly the value of one refunded meal. If the upgrade saves even one order from leaking, it has paid for itself.
Are paper bags useless when it rains?
No. A paper bag is the outer layer, not the waterproofing, and it does that job fine as long as it's closed at the top and the containers inside are sealed. Most "the bag got soaked" complaints are really "the gravy leaked and soaked the bag from inside."
Myth: You need plastic bags in the monsoon. Fact: Plastic doesn't stop a leaking container, and banned single-use plastic can get you fined. In September 2026, the Bengaluru South City Corporation fined a multiplex on Hosur Main Road ₹25,000 for using banned single-use plastics as part of a ₹75,000 penalty (Business Today). Our older guide to Bengaluru's plastic packaging rules covers what's allowed.
For a full meal, a 24 x 12 x 36 cm brown square bottom bag stands upright, so containers stay level instead of tipping in the delivery box. At about ₹4.29 a bag, fold the top over twice and staple it once. That fold is your rain cover.
When to use a heat-seal pouch instead
For smaller orders like biryani for one, snacks or dry items, a heat-seal pouch closes completely. Our 1 kg brown heat-sealable paper pouches (22 x 33 cm, 50 GSM) work with a manual bar sealer and give a tamper-evident closure, at about ₹3.60 each. The customer can see at a glance that nobody opened their food on the way.
For fried snacks such as bajji, samosas or fries, use a grease-resistant paper bag so oil doesn't weaken the paper from inside.
What does a rain-ready packing setup look like?
Here's how each layer fails in the rain and what to use instead.
| Layer | What goes wrong in rain | Better option at Packpe | Approx. cost per piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main dish | Loose lid, gravy seeps out on bumpy roads | Bagasse anti-leak container with lid, 750 ml | ₹14.19 + GST |
| Dal, sambar, single curry | Overfilled, lid pops | Bagasse anti-leak round container with lid, 500 ml | ₹11.45 + GST |
| Chutney, raita, extra gravy | Spills onto rotis and rice | Moulded fibre dip bowl with lid, 120 ml | ₹2.25 + GST |
| Fried items | Oil plus humidity weakens the bag | Grease-resistant paper bag, 24 x 5 x 30.5 cm | ₹2.64 + GST |
| Outer bag, full meal | Tips over, open top lets water in | Square bottom bag, 24 x 12 x 36 cm, folded and stapled | ₹4.29 + GST |
| Outer bag, small order | Open top, tampering worries | Heat-sealable paper pouch, 1 kg | ₹3.60 + GST |
Your 6-point rain-night checklist
- Wipe every container rim before closing the lid.
- Let gravies stop steaming before you lid them.
- Put every wet side in its own lidded dip bowl.
- Pack heavy, wet containers at the bottom and keep them level.
- Fold the bag top twice and staple it, or heat-seal the pouch.
- Tape the bill to the outside so the rider doesn't open the bag to check it.
When should a Bengaluru kitchen restock for the monsoon?
Before the rainy evenings, not during them. A wet Friday night is the worst possible time to discover you're down to your last 50 containers.
Packpe delivers in Bengaluru on the next working day, in the rest of Karnataka in 1–2 working days, and in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in 3–4 working days. A smart move is to combine items into one order: one pack of 750 ml containers (₹8,514) plus one pack of dip bowls (₹4,500) comes to ₹13,014 before GST, which is above the ₹10,000 mark for free delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Do bagasse containers go soggy in the rain?
Rain on the outside isn't really the problem, since the container sits inside a closed bag. What matters is the food inside. Bagasse holds hot curries well for a normal delivery window, but very watery dishes left for hours will soften it. For gravies, use the anti-leak containers with fitted lids and don't overfill.
Can I use plastic carry bags for delivery during the monsoon in Bengaluru?
Banned single-use plastic carry bags are still banned in the rain. Civic inspectors in Bengaluru continue to fine businesses for using them. A paper bag folded at the top, with sealed containers inside, protects the order well and keeps you on the right side of the rules.
How do I stop rotis and dosas from getting soggy in delivery?
Keep them away from steam and gravy. Pack gravies separately, let hot food stop steaming before you lid it, and wrap breads in food wrapping paper before boxing them. The paper absorbs a little moisture so the bread doesn't sweat against a closed lid.
What size container should I use for a South Indian meal?
For rice with a curry or a full meal, 750 ml rectangular works well. For dal, sambar or rasam on its own, use 500 ml round. Chutneys and podi-oil go into 60 ml or 120 ml dip bowls. If you're unsure, order free samples and test them with your real portions.
How fast can Packpe deliver packaging before a rainy weekend?
Bengaluru orders arrive the next working day, the rest of Karnataka in 1–2 working days, and Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in 3–4 working days. Order before the forecast turns, and combine items to cross ₹10,000 for free delivery.
